Overview
The 1649 Accountant Intern Program was established to ensure excellent performance in the City and County of San Francisco's Accountant Series. This Program is the first step in the Accountant classification series. Overall responsibility for the 1649 Accountant Intern Program for the City and County of San Francisco resides with the Office of the Controller, by delegation from the Department of Human Resources. The International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, Local 21, AFL-CIO, the bargaining unit representing the classifications in the Accounting Series, endorses this Program.
Interns are trained in an 18-month Program and mentored by higher-level, experienced accountants throughout the City and County. To provide Interns with optimum training and experience citywide, they participate in two 9-month rotations, generally at two different departments.
Program Entry
Applicants must file an application online on the City's Employment website. Submitted applications are reviewed and candidates who demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications are invited to participate in the examination process.
Minimum Qualifications:
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with twelve (12) semester units or eighteen (18) quarter units of coursework in accounting at time of appointment. (For information on how to obtain an equivalency certification for degrees attained outside of the U.S. click: How to Verify Education Requirements)
The examination process consists of the following two components:
I. Written Examination: Candidates will be tested to determine relative knowledge, skill and ability levels in job-related areas, including but not limited to: knowledge of accounting principles (including governmental accounting) and practices, mathematical ability, and ability to analyze data. It is highly recommended candidates review governmental accounting principles or take a governmental accounting course prior to taking the written examination. Courses equivalent to ACCT 56 (under "Course Description by Department" select "Business" http://www.ccsf.edu/Catalog) provided by City College of San Francisco may assist with preparation but not guarantee passing exam.
Candidates who participate in the written exam are not guaranteed advancement to the next phase of selection.
II. Oral/Performance Interview: Qualified candidates who receive a passing score in the written examination may be invited for oral/performance interviews. Candidates who participate in the Oral/Performance interview will be evaluated by the Steering Committee and determine who will be accepted into the program.
Intern Mentors and Supervisors
During the 18-month internship, Interns are assigned a Mentor and Supervisors during each rotation to guide and train them. There may be multiple Supervisors during a rotation and/or Supervisors may change, depending on the training topic. In some cases, the Mentor and Supervisor can be the same person. Mentors and Supervisors work closely together to provide Interns with comprehensive, quality training.
Training Workshops
Interns attend various training workshops to build their technical competencies and develop an understanding of the City's purchasing and accounting procedures. In addition to specific accounting systems training, the Interns are also familiarized with various City and County processes, policies and procedures with emphasis on their relationship to accounting.
Successful Completion of the Program
Interns receive official notification of successful completion of the Program, from the Controller's Office HR Unit. At the conclusion of the Program, successful Interns compete to be promoted to permanent status in Class 1652 Sr. Accountant, the beginning of the Accounting series. Successful interns are placed in permanent positions. We have a 95% success rate and launch one to two programs per year (depending on City and County departments needs and available funding).
